This Week In Doctor Who - November 9, 2005
(posted 9th Nov 2005, 12:38pm - TWIDW post #0355)
THIS WEEK IN DOCTOR WHO - Italian Premiere Week!
November 9, 2005 - Vol 8, No 45
The weekly guide to Doctor Who broadcasts worldwide.

Wednesday 9 November:
NRK 2 Norway - 8:05PM - Er Adam Den Rette?
Friday 11 November:
Jimmy (Italy) - 9PM - Rose (series premiere)
Jimmy (Italy) - 9:50PM - Speciale Doctor Who (documentary)
Saturday 12 November:
France 4 - 10:20PM - Des Mortes Inassouvies/L'humanité En Péril
Friday 18 November:
BBC One 9PM GMT/BBC Prime/BFBS 1/BFBS Navy live simulcast - Children In Need Doctor Who sketch 2005
Christmas Day 2005:
BBC One - UK Premiere of The Christmas Invasion! Start of David Tennant's era as the Doctor!
ITALY - Jimmy http://www.jimmy140.it premieres Doctor Who this Friday at 9PM, followed by a 20 minute Doctor Who documentary with the imaginative title of "Speciale Doctor Who". Jimmy is airing Doctor Who 6 times a week (the documentary also gets 6 airings), so if you have this channel you have no excuse to claim that you missed the episodes. Let's give Doctor Who a strong premiere in Italy.
Reminder - the Children In Need Doctor Who sketch on 18 November is expected to air in the 9PM half hour GMT/10PM CET (the schedule is fluid). In addition to the BBC One and BBC Prime broadcasts, it will also air on BFBS 1 and BFBS Navy, reaching British military worldwide. The scene is being kept a closely guarded secret, and
will be fairly short.
The Christmas Invasion (1 hour Doctor Who episode introducing David
Tennant as the 10th Doctor) will premiere on Christmas Day (Sunday
25 December) on BBC One http://www.bbc.co.uk/bbcone . Broadcast time
to be determined. As already known, the CBC in Canada
http://www.cbc.ca/television will air The Christmas Invasion on
Monday 26 December (Boxing Day).
Doctor Who Magazine reports that a mini-episode (not the one airing
with Children In Need) will be available on BBC's interactive TV
services after The Christmas Invasion airs. If you have access to
the red button, press it at that time. If you don't have access to
the red button, hope it comes out on a DVD release.
FRANCE - France 4 http://www.france4.tv is getting very good results out of Doctor Who, allegedly getting the best ratings of any show on the channel Tuesday for repeats airing after Midnight. (Repeats I didn't know about, so did not list them in the column or an update - sorry.) 2 episodes a week are airing 4 times each. Some shows air on France 4 and then repeat on France 2, which reaches a larger audience. It is unknown if Doctor Who will be such a show.
ABC Australia http://www.abc.net.au/tv goes to 2 episodes a day 5 days a week from Monday 28 November. Australia will be entering a part of the year where ratings are less important, and Doctor Who is being used as filler rather than waste money on original programming in the 6:30PM time period. While ABC wants to purchase The Christmas Invasion and Series Two, it has not been revealed if they plan to repeat the classic series again when they finish this current run of stories.
Shortly after last week's column went to press, UKTV Gold http://www.ukgold.tv responded by e-mail to viewer questions about classic Doctor Who's future on the channel. They claimed that Doctor Who will continue on the channel in 2006. They report having the rights to Tom Baker, Peter Davison, Colin Baker, and Sylvester McCoy stories. Their Pertwee rights are expired, though they might consider getting them again in the future. Looks like there is no interest in airing the black & white stories from the 1960s.

UKTV Gold has also made a change in the new series repeat schedule. The Sunday 9PM repeat has ended. As of 6 November the Sunday airing of the series was moved to Sunday afternoon, shifting weekly depending on other programmes. The Friday 8PM, Saturday 6PM, late Sunday, and Wednesday 11PM airings remain unaffected.
The BBC Press Office http://www.bbc.co.uk/pressoffice and C21 Media
http://www.c21media.net often announce when a Doctor Who
international sale occurs. Worth keeping an eye on, just in case.
